One thought on “Boston flowers

  1. It’s a standing joke in my immediate family. I refuse to plant flowers, I disparage them as useless.
I continue to cultivate the ones in place, hence the joke.
That said, I’ve used very similar planters, but put tomato plants, peppers (hot, frying, bell, etc), spices and more and get great productivity from them.

We loved the garden I made when we were in Qatar. We got the villa with a grand hole in the corner of the yard that was obviously for a garden.
I collected, erm, waste dirt, from the livestock market. That was largely goat, sheep and camel droppings and sand. The sand itself was somewhat saline, some silicone based sand a fair amount of powdered calcium carbonate.
Fortunately, I was able to get cat litter for clay and plenty of peat moss to mix into that mess.
In an approximately 10×10 area, we had watermelon, cucumbers (the Arabs wondered at “American” cucumbers, as the variety in the Gulf were more like gherkin, basil, mint (bad idea having them together, but my wife accidentally mixed the seeds), cantaloupe, tomatoes and watermelon and corn (accidental contributions, due to bird seed dropped into the garden and watermelon seeds spat into the garden, but we didn’t complain).
People came from miles around to see that small part of “Eden”. 🙂
