Some people have no shame

I’m always amazed at the things that some people will do for money. Maybe I shouldn’t be amazed. After all, people kill for money. Sometimes, though, killing seems more understandable that what some other people have done. Take, for example, this Go Fund Me page:

UPDATE: To further cement the fact that this is a scam, the scammers are now using a different picture on the Go Fund Me page, one from another little girl who died in 2007 from cancer:

That page was apparently set up by a person going by the name of “Norma Daniel”. UPDATE: The name has now changed to “Lisa Daniel”. Norma/Lisa has been on Twitter asking people to help “Elle”:

That second Twitter handle (@HelpUsSaveElle) then directs you to the Go Fund Me page above:

UPDATE: The picture on the Twitter page has also been changed to reflect the change on the Go Fund Me page:

Update: The Go Fund Me page is now down, and I’ve confirmed from a donor that the money is being returned. But the people behind this scam continue, having now registered “http://helpellefight.com” and having that site redirect to the non-existent Go Fund Me page.

Lucky for me, someone in the comments section of the Go Fund Me page caught on to the con and pointed out a couple of things. First, the girl in the Go Fund Me page and on the @HelpUsSaveElle Twitter profile is from several hair cut websites:

It could be very possible that little “Elle” went to get her hair cut at some point and had her picture taken, then she got cancer, and her parents really do need the cash. But look at Elle’s story:

“Elle had just turned 6, and a lump on her arm, previously thought by everyone including our doctor to be nothing, had grown quite large. Even after the MRI, we were sure it was nothing… but when they mentioned biopsy, my heart began to sink. Our worst fears were confirmed six days before Christmas 2012. Cancer. Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma to be exact.”

Now look at this story:

“Ali had just turned 15, and a lump on her arm, previously thought by everyone including our doctor to be nothing, had grown quite large. Even after the MRI, we were sure it was nothing… but when they mentioned biopsy, my heart began to sink. Our worst fears were confirmed six days before Christmas 2002. Cancer. Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma to be exact.”

Here’s Elle’s story again:

“The next two years were filled with highs and lows; optimism and utter devastation. It’s hard to understand unless you’ve been through it, but they were also filled with inexplicable joy, spontaneity and an acute understanding of the meaning of life. Two years later, almost to the day, of when our journey first began, Elle started to develop numbness in her jaw and her bones were very achy.”

And here’s Ali’s:

“The next two years were filled with highs and lows; optimism and utter devastation. It’s hard to understand unless you’ve been through it, but they were also filled with inexplicable joy, spontaneity and an acute understanding of the meaning of life. Two years later, almost to the day, of when our journey first began, Ali started to develop numbness in her jaw and her bones were very achy.”

Need I say more?

And it’s not just at Go Fund Me that this story has been used as a ploy to get cash. There is a now-defunct fundraiser at this page with a similar story. And there’s this Twitter account. And it’s not the first time that something like this happens.

Sadly, Ali passed away from the cancer that this callous “Norma Daniel” person is now trying to exploit to get money. Please go to the Go Fund Me page and report the fraudulent Go Fund Me page, then head over to Twitter and report “Norma” and all associated Twitter accounts: @HelpUsSaveElle, @3mj50hs6cf00, and @_helpsaveelle. And, if you work for Go Fund Me and are reading this, you really should do a better job at checking to make sure the fundraisers on your page are legitimate, lest you find yourselves being an unwilling accomplice to fraud and even outright theft.

  1. I just got tagged in one of these posts from Twitter and checked out the GoFundMe page… something about it didn’t seem right, I Google searched the image and there were already tons of stories about her death. Scary that people can just ‘copy and paste’ a story and get donations now.

  2. I’ve been tracking this since I was tweeted by one of their bots, it’s amazing they think they can get away from using an image that’s easily to find on Google with a reverse image search. Not to mention infuriating that they’re using a sick kid as well as a picture of one that actually died (at least when I became aware of it a couple days ago) to try and make money. I reported the GoFundMe page when it was up and also the YouCaring page which got shut down about four hours later. There’s low and then there’s invoking dying/dead children and exploiting that for personal gain like a complete scum bag.
I happened to find the link to your page after someone Tweeted it while I was watching the HelpUsSaveElle mentions to inform others of the scam, the link made that a lot easier than repeatedly typing messages out to others, thanks. Can’t believe Twitter still hasn’t suspended that account.
